Bladder Training Q&A
What is Bladder Training?
This is a technique that can be used to gain control of the bladder using “mind over bladder” techniques. It is used for overactive bladder and urge urinary incontinence.
How is Bladder training done?
The bladder has a “mind” of its own. When it fills up with urine, there is a natural response for the bladder to start squeezing. It’s not until we are around 2 years old, that we become “potty trained” and are able to inhibit this reflexive squeeze with our mind. Unfortunately, as we age, the bladder starts to have a “mind” of its own again. Through bladder training, we can take back control of our bladder.
Step 1: Keep a bladder diary and review it with Dr. Stone.
Step 2: Based on your voiding diaries Dr. Stone will suggest a voiding schedule. For example, if you’re using the restroom every 45 minutes, he may suggest going to the bathroom every 30 minutes with or without an urge.
Step 3: Use timed voiding. When you get an urge before your scheduled void, do NOT run to the bathroom. Sit down, do Pelvic floor muscle exercises, try to distract yourself until the urge passes. After the urge passes, use the bathroom.
Step 4: After 1 week of no leakage, increase the time between your scheduled voids by 15-30 minutes.
How successful is Bladder Training?
Bladder training can help improve symptoms in about 50% of women with urge urinary incontinence.
